Well-trained pilots have an intuitive understanding of the weapons systems of their vessel and the capabilities of its targeting computer. Putting this knowledge to use allows the pilot to squeeze off a series of shots that would (at best) miss or (at worst) blow up the weapons if tried by a less experienced being.

Note that improving this skill allows more shots to be fired. Also, failure may still result in jammed weapons.
